Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-348 and DMR-005, this 1946-D Jefferson Nickel displays a D/D Southwest repunched mintmark — meaning the initial D impression was placed slightly too far to the northeast, and the corrective second punch positioned the final D to the southwest, leaving a remnant of the first impression visible to the northeast of the primary letter. Three documented die stages track the variety through its production cycle: Stage A places both reverse and obverse in early die state (EDS), Stage B advances both to mid-die-state (MDS), and Stage C is late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The confirmed EDS and MDS stages allow collectors to evaluate specimens against known die state reference points, with earlier stages offering the clearest view of the southwest displacement before progressive die wear softens the secondary impression.
