Description

Third documented repunched mintmark for the 1946-D Jefferson Nickel, RPM-003 records a hand-punched mint mark variety from the first postwar year after the return to standard composition. Cataloged by VarietyVista with codes UVC-347 and DMR-004, this variety was struck at the Denver Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel — the normal alloy that resumed after the wartime silver composition (56% Cu, 35% Ag, 9% Mn) ended with 1945 production. The restoration of regular composition also meant the D mint mark returned to its original small size on the reverse, replacing the large D that had appeared above Monticello during the wartime years. Die progression spans three stages: Stage A with reverse and obverse in early die state (EDS), Stage B at mid-die state (MDS), and Stage C with obverse and reverse in late die state (LDS). As RPM-003, this represents the third repunched mintmark cataloged for the date, documenting the continuation of hand-punching at Denver through the postwar transition. Felix Schlag's Jefferson Nickel was minted during the postwar economic boom that would define the final era of circulating silver coinage in American numismatics.
