1945-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-101 in the Fivaz-Stanton Cherry Pickers' Guide, this 1945 San Francisco Washington silver quarter is cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-002 and displays a medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the chin, and RTY of LIBERTY. The reverse is designated MMS-002 with the Trumpet Tail feature. Two obverse-reverse die combinations are documented across six stages. Under UVC-0569 and DMR-004, Stage A shows the obverse in EMDS with the reverse in MDS. Stage B introduces a die crack across the forehead and upper hair at MDS. Stage C brings the obverse to LMDS with light die scratches running north-south at each lower wing tip. Stage D develops a die crack across the bust at LDS. A second die combination under UVC-0570 and DMR-020 continues with Stage E showing numerous die scratches on the obverse at VLDS with a changed reverse die in MDS, followed by Stage F with a heavy die crack across the bust at VLDS as the obverse scratches wear away. The FS-101 designation confirms this as the primary doubled die obverse for the date and mint.
