1945-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1945-S 25¢ WDDO-002 and cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-I+VIII and Cherrypickers FS-25-1945S-101, this Washington Silver Quarter features a counterclockwise spread visible on IN GOD WE TRUST and the lower right TY of LIBERTY. The CONECA Class I+VIII compound designation indicates a combination of Rotated Hub Doubling and Tilted Hub Doubling — two distinct hubbing anomalies acting simultaneously during the die manufacturing process, producing a complex doubling pattern that incorporates both rotational and tilt-induced displacement across the affected design elements. Obverse die markers include a short die scratch extending from the lower right of the R in TRUST and a light die scratch running southwest from the upper left of the B in LIBERTY. The reverse carries several die scratches running south from the lower right wing tip, along with two die scratches running northeast from the upper R in DOLLAR. The Cherrypickers reference notes this was listed as FS-25-1945S-101 but was removed in the 6th Edition — a reclassification that sometimes occurs when attribution standards are updated or when a variety's significance is reassessed relative to other known varieties for the same date. Despite the Cherrypickers removal, the CONECA and Wexler cross-references maintain its documented status. The 1945-S Washington Quarter was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the final year of World War II, in 90% silver composition weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter. John Flanagan designed the coin with Washington's portrait based on Houdon's bust. The compound Class I+VIII mechanism is relatively uncommon among Washington Quarter doubled dies and distinguishes this variety mechanistically from the more typical single-class hub doubling events documented across the series.
