1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-034
Error
Description
Struck in the final year of wartime silver alloy composition, this 1945-S Jefferson Nickel carries an S/S South repunched mint mark with the secondary impression displaced below the primary strike. The large S mint mark on the reverse — positioned above Monticello as on all wartime nickels — shows the characteristic doubled serifs of a southward repunch. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-487 and DMR-037, three documented die stages track the variety's progression. Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed. Stage B shows the reverse at MDS and develops a light die crack across the upper hair at LDS. Stage C at late die state remains unconfirmed. The reverse die is also listed as DDR-007, making this a potential two-variety die pair combining a repunched mint mark with doubled die reverse characteristics. The 1945-S wartime nickel was the last issue struck in the 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese composition adopted in 1942 to conserve nickel for military use. Thirty-four RPMs documented for this date reflects the extensive examination these historically distinctive coins continue to receive.
