1945-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this San Francisco Mint wartime silver Jefferson Nickel displays Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on UNITED STATES and FIVE on the reverse, where the secondary hub impression produced visible spread across the legend and denomination. The wartime silver alloy — 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese — gives these 1942-1945 nickels a distinctive appearance and composition that sets them apart from standard copper-nickel issues. Die markers are plentiful: a die scratch extends from the N of IN down to below GOD, die scratches appear below ERT of LIBERTY, a die scratch runs above FIVE, another sits between the T and E of UNITED, and a die gouge is positioned above the left arch of Monticello. These multiple scratches and gouges provide a robust set of diagnostics for confident attribution.
