1945-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, WDDR-001 for the 1945-S Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class V pivoted hub doubling visible on STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, UNUM, and LLO of MONTICELLO. Class V doubling occurs when the hub pivots around a fixed point during die creation, producing a fan-shaped spread pattern where design elements closer to the pivot show less displacement and those farther away show progressively more. Obverse die markers include two die scratches extending south from Jefferson's chin. The reverse carries additional significance: this die is also listed as WRPM-019 and by CONECA as RPM#27, meaning the same die pair exhibits both a doubled die reverse and a repunched mintmark — a dual-variety combination that enhances collector interest. A die dot to the right of the S in CENTS serves as a secondary reverse attribution marker. San Francisco struck approximately 58 million nickels in 1945, the final year of the wartime silver alloy composition before returning to the standard copper-nickel formulation in 1946.
