1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-019

Description

Cataloged as the nineteenth repunched mintmark for the 1945-S Jefferson Nickel wartime silver alloy issue, RPM-019 documents yet another instance of overlapping S mintmark impressions on this popular wartime denomination. Recorded by VarietyVista under UVC-333 and DMR-021, four die stages track the die's production life from Stage A through Stage D. The 1945-S represents the final year of wartime silver alloy production — the 35% silver composition was discontinued after 1945, returning to standard copper-nickel in 1946. San Francisco struck these nickels with the large S mintmark positioned above Monticello's dome, a placement unique to the wartime series that made the mintmark far more conspicuous than the small pre-war and post-war locations. Nineteen documented RPMs for this date and mint attests to the significant die population required for wartime nickel output and the thorough cataloging applied to these silver-content issues.
