1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-014

Description

A triple-punched mintmark variety — S/S/S West, North — this 1945-S Jefferson Nickel Wartime Silver Alloy RPM-014 is cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-328 and DMR-016. Triple repunching occurs when the mintmark punch was applied three times in slightly different positions, creating overlapping impressions. Three die states are documented: Stage A is EDS but unconfirmed. Stage B shows the reverse at MDS with a die crack SE through the upper hair, a die chip in the lower 5 of the date, and shares the same obverse die as RPM-016c — a linkage connecting two catalog entries through common tooling. Stage C is LDS but unconfirmed. The shared obverse die with RPM-016c means these varieties differ only in their reverse dies. The 1945-S wartime nickel was struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese with the large S above Monticello. As the final year of wartime alloy production, 1945 represents the last date these silver-content nickels were manufactured before returning to copper-nickel in 1946.
