1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-010

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint wartime silver Jefferson Nickel RPM-010 features obverse die scratches that progressively wore away through service. Die markers UVC-323 / DMR-011: Stage A with a die gouge outside the left leg of the second U of PLURIBUS at EDS and die scratches North-South on obverse at MDS; Stage B with reverse at MDS and obverse die scratches almost worn away at LDS; Stage C with reverse at LDS and a die crack southeast through upper hair at VLDS. The documented attenuation of obverse die scratches from prominent at Stage A to nearly obliterated at Stage B illustrates how continued striking polishes out surface irregularities. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1945-S was the final year of wartime silver nickel production at the San Francisco Mint.
