1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-008

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with universal variety code UVC-321 and die marriage record DMR-009, this 1945 San Francisco wartime silver alloy Jefferson nickel carries a repunched mintmark on the large S above Monticello's dome. Three documented die stages trace the progressive deterioration of this die pair. Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed pending additional specimens. By Stage B, the reverse has reached mid-die state while a die crack has developed running southeast through the upper hair on the obverse, pushing the obverse into late die state. Stage C sees further progression, with a die crack from the right side of the dome extending south between pillars number 3 and number 4, while the obverse reaches very late die state. The wartime silver alloy nickels of 1943 through 1945 are a popular specialty within the Jefferson nickel series, and the dramatic die crack progression from hair to dome across die states makes RPM-008 an appealing variety for collectors who enjoy assembling multi-stage die progressions.
