1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint wartime silver Jefferson Nickel features distinctive VLDS die cracks that emerged only at the end of the die's extended service life. Die markers UVC-320 / DMR-008: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with reverse and obverse at LDS; Stage D with a light die crack from the right dome southwest to pillar #3 at VLDS, a die crack southeast through upper hair at VLDS, and small die chips above IBE of LIBERTY. The dome-to-pillar crack precisely locates failure between specific Monticello architectural elements. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the oversized S above Monticello's dome distinguishes this wartime silver alloy coin. The 1945-S was the final San Francisco wartime nickel before composition reverted to standard copper-nickel in 1946.
