Description
Struck at San Francisco in the wartime silver alloy (56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese), this 1945-S RPM-005 Jefferson Nickel carries an oversized S above Monticello's dome. Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-318 / DMR-006 across three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with the reverse at LDS and a die crack running North-South in the hair. The late die state hair crack documents structural fatigue as the die neared retirement. Weighing 5.0 grams at 21.21 mm, Felix Schlag's design featured the oversized mintmark mandated by Congress to distinguish silver-content wartime issues from standard copper-nickel coins.
