1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002
Error
Description
Catalogued by VarietyVista with markers UVC-315 and DMR-003, the 1945-S Jefferson Nickel RPM-002 is identified by an S/S/S triple repunching with secondary impressions displaced to the Northeast and West relative to the primary S. This is a wartime silver alloy nickel — struck in 35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese from mid-1942 through the end of 1945. The San Francisco Mint's large S mintmark, placed above Monticello in the wartime style, makes mintmark examination more accessible than on standard Jefferson Nickels. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B is MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C records both reverse and obverse at LDS. The triple-direction repunching — Northeast and West — requires magnification to resolve the secondary and tertiary S impressions from the primary. Wartime Jefferson Nickel RPM varieties attract collectors drawn both to the historical context of the silver composition and to the diagnostic challenge of multiple-direction repunching. RPM-002 is the second-listed repunched mintmark variety for the 1945-S wartime nickel, and mid-grade examples where all three S impressions can be clearly resolved are the most sought for attribution.
