1945 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010

Description

Marking the final year of wartime silver alloy production for the Jefferson Nickel series, this 1945 Philadelphia issue carries a Class II distorted hub doubled die reverse attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as CONECA DDR-009. The Class II doubling shows on UNUM and OF AMERICA, where the tilted hub impression created directional displacement across the reverse legends. Notably, the reverse die for this variety is also documented as a repunched mint mark listed as 1945-P 5c WRPM-018, classified as P/P/P North/South, meaning the large P above Monticello's dome was punched at least three times with north-south displacement. Obverse die markers include die scratches near the rim above BER of LIBERTY. On the reverse, die scratches appear below UNITED and a die scratch is visible near the rim to the right of the building. The dual attribution as both a doubled die reverse and a triple-punched mint mark makes WDDR-010 an especially appealing variety for collectors, combining two distinct categories of die error on a single wartime silver nickel.
