1945 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-008
Error
Description
Light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and AMERICA distinguishes DDR-008 on the 1945-P Jefferson Nickel, a wartime silver alloy issue struck in the 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese composition adopted in 1942 to conserve nickel for armor plating. The distinctive large P mintmark above Monticello on the reverse signals this non-standard alloy to collectors and the public alike. Cataloged as UVC-788 with DMR-075, the variety has been documented at Stage B in mid-die state on both the obverse and reverse, with early and late die states unconfirmed. The light spread across two prominent reverse legends rewards methodical examination under magnification, where the secondary impression beneath each letter emerges as a narrow thickening of the strokes rather than a clearly separated doubled image. Jefferson Nickels of the wartime silver era (1942-1945) carry a grayish tone compared to the standard copper-nickel alloy, and their 35% silver content gives them intrinsic precious-metal value alongside the numismatic variety premium.
