1945 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as FS-804 in the Cherrypickers' Guide and carrying the expanded designation FS-804/501 (030.5), this fourth doubled die reverse for the 1945 Jefferson Nickel exhibits extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and the last O of MONTICELLO. The 1945 wartime nickel was struck in the emergency 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese alloy adopted in 1942 to conserve nickel for military use, with the large P mintmark above Monticello identifying Philadelphia production. Die markers under UVC-192 and DMR-002 document three stages: Stage A (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B (MDS, unconfirmed), and Stage C showing both reverse and obverse in confirmed Late Die State. VarietyVista notes the reverse is separately listed as RPM-001, indicating this die also carries a repunched mintmark variety — a dual-variety die that interests collectors pursuing both RPM and DDR attributions on a single coin. The Cherrypickers' listing elevates this to a recognized variety in the hobby's primary reference, and collectors should note that wartime silver alloy nickels have a distinctive gray-white appearance quite different from the standard copper-nickel composition.
