1945 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003

Description

One of the strongest doubled die reverses documented for the wartime silver Jefferson Nickel series, this 1945-P DDR-003 exhibits bold spread across virtually every reverse inscription: E PLURIBUS UNUM, MONTICELLO, FIVE CENTS, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Cross-referenced as FS-803 (030.3) in the Cherrypickers' Guide, this variety carries significant collector recognition. The 1945 Philadelphia nickel was struck in the wartime 35% silver alloy (56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese), identifiable by the large P mintmark above Monticello's dome — a placement unique to the 1942-1945 wartime composition era. Three die stages trace this die's arc: Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed; Stage B at mid-die state shows east-west die scratches on the reverse; and Stage C places both sides in late die state.
