Description

Recorded as UVC-0555 DMR-011 in the VarietyVista catalog, the 1945-D DDO-009 is a doubled die obverse on the Denver Mint Washington quarter showing light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY. This .900 silver quarter was struck during the final year of World War II, when wartime production demands placed heavy stress on coining dies. Three die stages have been identified. Stage A, the early die state, remains unconfirmed. Stage B, the mid-die state, is also unconfirmed. Stage C, the late die state, shows a die crack across the upper hair and a die crack across the bust on the obverse, with the reverse also at late die state. The progression to late die state with multiple cracks indicates this obverse die endured significant production before failing. The light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY places the hub doubling on the two most prominent obverse text elements, though the displacement is subtle and requires magnification to confirm.
