1945-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Exhibiting a center-directed spread on QUARTER DOLLAR that decreases from left to right, this 1945 Denver Mint Washington Quarter doubled die reverse also shows doubling on the leaves and bottom of the branch north of QUARTER. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1945-D 25 cent WDDR-001, the left-to-right diminishing gradient follows the geometry typical of distorted hub doubling where misalignment is greatest at one edge and tapers across the design. The obverse carries a die crack running across the base of the bust as its primary diagnostic marker. On the reverse, a strong southwest-to-northeast die scratch appears near the top of the inside of the eagle's right wing, accompanied by a die gouge visible as a dot south-southeast from the back of the arrow feathers. These reverse die markers complement the doubling itself by providing positional diagnostics that confirm the specific die used. The combination of graduated inscription spread with architectural leaf doubling on the branch makes WDDR-001 a noteworthy entry among wartime Washington Quarter varieties, where the Denver Mint's high-volume production occasionally yielded attributable hub doubling.
