1944 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
With attribution codes UVC-766 and DMR-038, the 1944 DDO-004 Jefferson nickel is another doubled die from the wartime silver alloy series. The obverse exhibits light hub-doubling spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date, a doubling distribution pattern commonly seen across multiple wartime nickel dies. Stage C specimens confirm both the obverse and reverse at late die state, meaning this die pair was used extensively before retirement, and the doubling may be partially softened by die wear on later-struck coins. The 1944 Philadelphia wartime nickel had a mintage of 119.1 million pieces, struck in the 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese composition mandated by the wartime emergency. Collectors seeking this variety should examine late-die-state specimens carefully, as the combination of light original doubling and advanced die wear can make attribution challenging without comparison to confirmed reference specimens. The large P mint mark above Monticello remains the quickest identifier of the wartime alloy.
