1944 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Designated a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Variety, WDDO-002 on the 1944 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VI distended hub doubling with strong extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Struck in the wartime silver alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese used from 1942 to 1945 to conserve nickel for the war effort, this coin carries the large mint mark above Monticello characteristic of wartime issues. Attributed by Whaden Curtis, the obverse die markers include a die gouge extending west from the tip of Jefferson's nose and a die clash to the left of his chin. Reverse markers include a die scratch extending north from the top of the small right window. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1944-P WDDO-002, the "Best Of" designation recognizes this as an outstanding representative of Class VI doubling among Jefferson Nickel varieties.
