Description
Documented by VarietyVista with dual die stage tracking under UVC-762/DMR-034 and UVC-763/DMR-035, this 1944 Jefferson Nickel DDO-001 displays light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date — a broadly distributed hub displacement affecting the major obverse inscriptions and devices. The dual UVC tracking numbers indicate this obverse die was paired with two different reverse dies during its service life. Stage A is early die state (EDS, unconfirmed). Stage B (UVC-762) shows a die clash above the chin and below the knot of Jefferson's queue, with the reverse rotated counterclockwise and both sides in MDS. Stage C (UVC-763) shows the obverse in LDS with the reverse die changed to a fresh MDS replacement. The reverse die change from UVC-762 to UVC-763 documents the mint's practice of replacing worn reverse dies while retaining a still-serviceable obverse die, creating different die pairings that produce coins with identical obverse characteristics but distinct reverse die markers. The 1944 Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint during World War II, and while 1942-1945 nickels from Philadelphia with large mintmarks above Monticello were wartime silver alloy (35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese), the standard composition was 75% copper and 25% nickel weighing 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. Felix Schlag designed both the Jefferson portrait obverse and the Monticello reverse. The die clash marks above the chin and below the knot documented in Stage B provide evidence that the die pair struck together without an intervening planchet at some point during production, transferring faint design elements between the opposing die faces.
