Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0428 and DMR-009, DDO-008 on the 1944-D Washington Silver Quarter exhibits a light spread on RTY of LIBERTY and the ribbon end — a selective doubling pattern affecting only the terminal letters of the motto and the ribbon detail below the bust truncation. Three die stages have been identified: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows a light die crack across the base of the bust in mid die state with the reverse also in mid die state, and Stage C displays a die crack across the upper hair in late die state with the reverse also in late die state. The progressive die cracking from bust base (Stage B) to upper hair (Stage C) documents the structural deterioration of this working die across its production lifespan. The 1944-D Washington Quarter was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm, during a year when wartime demand pushed quarter production to high levels across all active mints. John Flanagan's Washington portrait, adapted from Jean-Antoine Houdon's 1785 bust of the first president, is rendered in sufficient detail that even the light doubling on RTY becomes diagnostically visible under magnification — the serif letterforms of these particular characters amplify subtle displacement into detectable separation.
