1944-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1944-D 25¢ WDDO-002 and cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-I and Cherrypickers FS-25-1944D-101, this Washington Silver Quarter shows a counterclockwise spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials, the bottom of the ribbon, and the date, with master die doubling visible on the underside of the nose and on Washington's lower ear. The presence of both working die doubling (CCW spread on inscriptions) and master die doubling (nose and ear) indicates that anomalies occurred at two different stages of the die production hierarchy — the master die carried its own doubling that was then transferred to all working dies, while this particular working die received additional CCW displacement during its own hubbing event. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge to the left of the upper nine in the date and a light die crack running across the base of the bust. Reverse markers show a short strong die gouge running northwest from the lower E of UNITED and a die crack through the center of the E and P of PLURIBUS. The Cherrypickers listing as FS-25-1944D-101 confirms this variety's status as a recognized cherrypicking target worthy of active searching. The 1944-D Washington Quarter was struck at the Denver Mint during World War II in 90% silver composition weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter. John Flanagan's design continued through the war years with no design modifications. The dual-level doubling — master die and working die — creates a variety with layered complexity where some elements of the doubling appear on all coins from this master die lineage while the CCW spread is unique to this specific working die.
