1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-025
Error
Description
Struck in the 90% silver composition standard for wartime Washington Quarters, the 1943 Philadelphia Mint DDO-025 exhibits light spread on LIBERTY. Cataloged as UVC-0311 and DMR-026, the die stage progression documents three stages: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse at early die state. Stage B is an unconfirmed mid-die-state. Stage C reaches late die state with a die crack across the upper hair extending into the field and continuing behind Liberty's head, plus a die crack descending down the eagle's right wing on the reverse. The hair-to-field crack on the obverse at LDS traces a path from the portrait detail into open space, documenting severe die fatigue in the upper obverse. The corresponding wing crack on the reverse confirms both sides had reached advanced deterioration. While the LIBERTY doubling itself is light, the extensive LDS crack network provides strong supplementary diagnostics for identifying specimens of this 1943 silver quarter variety.
