1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-022
Error
Description
Cataloged as DDO-022 (UVC-0308, DMR-023), this 1943 Philadelphia Washington quarter shows a medium spread on LIBERTY with lighter spreading on TRU of TRUST, the date, and the ribbon end. Three die stages are documented. Stage A and Stage B are early and mid-die state respectively, both with markers unconfirmed. Stage C in late die state develops a die crack across the upper forehead and hair, a crack across the bust extending into the field in front and into the queue behind, and a crack down the eagle's right wing. The 1943 Philadelphia quarter was struck in 90% silver during the height of wartime production. The medium LIBERTY spread serves as the primary identification point, with the lighter TRU and date spreading confirming the attribution under closer examination. By Stage C, the extensive crack network spanning forehead, bust, and eagle wing indicates a die approaching the end of its useful life. The bust crack's extension both forward into the field and backward into the queue is distinctive, creating a continuous line that bisects the portrait area.
