1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-012
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-0298 with die marker reference DMR-013, this 1943 Washington Quarter exhibits light spread on RTY of LIBERTY and is documented as a combination variety — the reverse is listed as DDR-001, pairing hub doubling on both sides of this die marriage. Four die stages are documented, an unusually deep progression: Stage A shows obverse in Early Die State with reverse also listed as DDR-001 in EDS; Stage B records die cracks across the upper hair in Mid Die State with a crack down the eagle's wing; Stage C at Late Die State remains unconfirmed; and Stage D documents a die crack across the lower front of the bust at Very Late Die State with the reverse also in VLDS. The four-stage documentation from EDS through VLDS indicates this die pair served an exceptionally long production run, allowing collectors to track progressive deterioration across the full spectrum of die life. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter design, in its eleventh year of production. Philadelphia Mint, 90% silver at 6.25 grams. The dual DDO/DDR combination variety status adds attribution depth beyond what either side alone would provide, making this die marriage a target for collectors who specialize in combination varieties across the Washington Quarter series.
