Description

Struck on the wartime silver alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese that replaced standard nickel composition from 1942 through 1945, this 1943-P Jefferson Nickel WDDO-010 displays Class I counterclockwise rotated hub doubling across multiple obverse elements. The close CCW spread is visible on LIBERTY, the star, the date, and IN GOD WE TRUST, demonstrating the consistent rotational displacement characteristic of Class I doubling where a hub-to-die misalignment during hubbing produces uniform directional spread. Attributed by Mike Bruggeman under Wexler Variety ID 1943-P WDDO-010, this variety belongs to the distinctive wartime series identified by the large P mint mark above Monticello on the reverse — the first time Philadelphia used a mint mark on any denomination. Die markers include a light die scratch from the E of LIBERTY toward the back of Jefferson's head and a small die dot between the T and Y of LIBERTY. No significant reverse die markers have been noted. The wartime silver alloy issues remain popular with collectors for both their precious metal content and their unique place in American numismatic history. Reverse: Series of N/S die scratches above right arch; short die gouge between lower portion of D of UNITED and first S of STATES; die crack to right of large semicircular window; slanted die crack between first and second columns.
