1943 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006
Error
Description
The 1943 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006 on the Jefferson Nickel is classified as Class VI, Distended Hub Doubling, showing strong extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Class VI doubling occurs when the hub is distorted or flexed during the hubbing process, creating a distinctive form of doubling that differs from the pivoted or rotated spreads of other classes. An early die state of this variety may reveal it to be a CONECA 5-O-VI with a reverse die change and no P/P reverse pairing. This wartime nickel was struck in the 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese composition mandated from mid-1942 through 1945, weighing 5.00 grams at 21.2 mm diameter. Die markers note no significant obverse features, while the reverse shows a die crack into the field from the roof on the right side of the building north of the small right window, plus a die gouge appearing as a dot to the right of the top of the fourth column. Very Late Die State specimens exhibit heavy metal flow lines, indicating extensive die wear before retirement.
