1943 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Class I rotated hub doubling showing very nice doubling on LIBERTY, the star, the date, and IN GOD WE TRUST characterizes this fourth DDO for the 1943-P Jefferson Nickel, struck in the wartime 35% silver alloy composition adopted to conserve nickel for military use. Die markers include a die scratch running from Jefferson's nose to the U of TRUST and a series of die dots between the first T and R of TRUST on the obverse, while the reverse is itself a doubled die listed as 1943-P 5c WDDR-001 — making this a rare dual-sided doubled die pairing. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1943-P WDDO-004 and attributed by John A. Wexler, the variety's Class I designation indicates a rotational hub displacement between impressions. The 1943 wartime Jefferson Nickel carries a large P mintmark above Monticello's dome, the first time Philadelphia used a mintmark on any denomination, distinguishing the silver alloy coins from pre-war copper-nickel issues. The dual DDO/DDR die marriage adds exceptional collector appeal, as coins showing hub doubling on both sides from a single die pair are relatively uncommon. The die dots between T and R of TRUST provide a precise fingerprint for this specific working die.
