1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-024
Error
Description
Struck in the wartime silver alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese used from 1942 to 1945, the 1943 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel DDO-024 shows medium spread on the date, star, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST. Cataloged as UVC-1841 and DMR-100, die stage progression documents three stages: Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state. Stage B is an unconfirmed mid-die-state. Stage C reaches late die state with a die clash visible through the lower knot and a die scratch running north-south through the M of MONTICELLO. The LDS clash through the lower knot and the M scratch serve as paired reverse diagnostics for late-stage specimens. The large mint mark above Monticello on the reverse, characteristic of all wartime Jefferson Nickels, distinguishes these silver-composition issues from their standard nickel counterparts. The medium spread across four separate obverse design elements provides multiple pickup zones for this wartime variety.
