1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-017

Description

Exhibiting lighter doubling than its companion DDO-013, DDO-017 on the 1943-P Wartime Silver Jefferson Nickel shows spread confined to IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBE of LIBERTY — leaving the remainder of the obverse legend unaffected. Cataloged as UVC-062 with DMR-009, Stage B pairs this obverse with RPM-008 on the reverse, placing it at mid-die state. A die crack running from the right dome of Monticello south-southwest between pillars two and three provides a distinctive reverse die marker for attribution. The narrower scope of doubling on DDO-017, affecting fewer design elements than the more dramatic DDO-013, reflects a smaller magnitude of hub displacement during the die-making process. The 1943-P wartime nickel's silver alloy — 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese — gives these coins a distinctive grayish appearance compared to the standard copper-nickel composition, and the large P mintmark above Monticello identifies the special wartime composition.
