1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-015
Error
Description
Struck on the wartime silver alloy composition of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, this 1943 Jefferson Nickel DDO-015 displays strong extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Die markers include UVC-085 and DMR-032. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed); and Stage C in late die state showing a light die clash behind the knot and a die crack running from the right dome southward into pillar number 3. The reverse die is listed as RPM-031, creating a multi-variety pairing where both obverse hub doubling and a repunched mintmark appear on a single coin. Wartime Jefferson Nickels (1942-1945) replaced the standard copper-nickel alloy to conserve nickel for military use, and the large P, D, or S mintmark was placed above Monticello's dome to distinguish them. Doubled die varieties on wartime issues carry added collector interest due to their distinctive metallic composition and historical significance.
