1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-721 with die marriage DMR-075, the 1943 Jefferson Nickel DDO-011 shows light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date — appearing across multiple obverse design elements on one of American numismatics' most distinctive wartime coins. The 1943 Jefferson Nickel was struck in the emergency 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese alloy adopted from mid-1942 through 1945 to conserve nickel for wartime munitions, identified by its large mint mark above Monticello on the reverse. The mid die state shows both obverse and reverse in moderate deterioration, while the early and late die states remain unconfirmed. Light doubled die varieties on wartime silver nickels require careful magnified examination, as the distinctive gray-silver color and often impaired surfaces of this alloy can make subtle doubling more challenging to detect than on standard nickel-composition coins. The broad distribution of doubling across the motto, LIBERTY, star, and date indicates a comprehensive hub misalignment rather than a localized effect, and all four areas should be checked when examining candidate specimens.
