1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-009
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-009, this 1943 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel from the wartime silver alloy series shows a light spread on IN GOD WE, LIBERTY, the star, and the date. The die documentation spans two universal variety codes tracking a reverse die change mid-production. Under UVC-718 with die marriage DMR-072, Stages A and B in early and mid-die state have unconfirmed markers, while Stage C at late-to-mid die state reveals a die crack running from the dome of Monticello southward between pillars three and four. The die then transitions to UVC-719 with die marriage DMR-073 at Stage D, where a new reverse die is paired with the same doubled obverse in late die state, and the mintmark sits far to the left of center. The reverse die change partway through production is significant because it demonstrates that the mint continued using this doubled obverse die even after retiring its original reverse partner. Wartime silver nickels with doubled dies from 1943 are part of the brief 1942-1945 large-mintmark era, and the dome-to-pillars die crack in Stage C provides the clearest visual diagnostic for earlier strikes.
