1943-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-009
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista, this 1943-D Washington Quarter DDO-009 shows medium-strength hub doubling spread on IBERTY of LIBERTY and the ribbon end of the bust truncation. The medium spread level means the secondary impressions are visible under moderate magnification and fall between the subtle diagnostics of light-spread varieties and the immediately obvious separation seen on strong-spread examples. The die progression is tracked under UVC-0500 and DMR-026: Stage A represents an unconfirmed early die state, Stage B confirms both the obverse and reverse at mid-die state (MDS), and Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. The 1943-D Washington Quarter was produced at the Denver Mint during World War II, a period of heightened production demands across all denominations to support both domestic commerce and military needs. Doubled die varieties from wartime quarters are of interest to collectors because they document the die manufacturing process during a period when production pressures may have contributed to quality variations. The concentration of doubling on IBERTY rather than the full word LIBERTY, combined with spread on the ribbon end, indicates the hub displacement was most pronounced in the left-center portion of the obverse design. Collectors should examine the IBERTY letters and the ribbon end below the bust for secondary impressions.
