1943-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1943-D 25¢ WDDO-005 with no additional cross-references currently known, this Washington Silver Quarter features a counterclockwise spread from a pivot at 9 o'clock visible on LIBERTY, the date, the designer's initials JF (John Flanagan), the bottom of the ribbon, and slightly on WE. The CCW rotation from a 9 o'clock pivot — positioned at the left equator of the die — produces maximum displacement on design elements diametrically opposite the pivot, with LIBERTY and the date on the right and bottom periphery showing the strongest doubling while WE near the pivot shows only slight displacement. Obverse die markers include curving die scratches below the E in WE and a short die gouge running southwest from the bottom left corner of the D in UNITED. The reverse carries two parallel die scratches running northeast from the lower part of the branch end to the right of the mintmark, plus a die scratch running northeast from the lower part of the branch end to the left of the mintmark — the symmetrical placement of these scratches on either side of the D mintmark creates a distinctive bracketing pattern useful for quick reverse verification. The 1943-D Washington Quarter was struck at the Denver Mint during the height of World War II in 90% silver composition (90% silver, 10% copper), weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm. John Flanagan's design depicts Washington on the obverse with a heraldic eagle reverse.
