1943-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
Attributed by VarietyVista and cross-referenced as FS-101 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, this 1943 Denver Mint Washington Quarter exhibits a strong doubled die obverse spread on the ear, hair curls, and queue of George Washington's portrait. Die marker reference UVC-0331 DMR-007 provides precise identification. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is the early die state, Stage B shows a die crack running down the eagle's right wing and across the left center lower wreath, and Stage C develops a die crack across the upper hair and bust, continuing through the Q of QUARTER to the rim. The FS-101 Cherrypickers listing confirms this variety's significance within the Washington Quarter series. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, the 1943-D was produced during World War II, the final era of silver circulating coinage that continued through 1964 before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver quarter production. The strong doubling on the ear and hair curls provides readily identifiable diagnostics, while the progressive die crack development across three stages documents the die's deterioration through its production life.
