1942-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-008

Description

Cataloged as RPM-008 by VarietyVista (UVC-0285, DMR-013), this 1942-S Washington quarter displays a triply repunched S mintmark with secondary impressions to the southeast and east, also classified as MMS-002 with a trumpet tail mintmark style. Three die stages document the production arc. Stage A in early die state has markers unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die state shows the reverse progressing while the obverse develops a light die crack across the upper hair and another in the hair and forehead. Stage C in late die state remains unconfirmed. The S/S/S triple repunching indicates the mintmark punch was applied at least three times before achieving acceptable placement, with earlier impressions displaced southeast and east of the final position. The trumpet tail adds a stylistic element to the attribution. Washington silver quarters from 1942 were struck during the early war years, and the San Francisco Mint's role in producing circulating coinage during this period generated numerous mintmark varieties that continue to be documented by specialists.
