1942-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

An S/S West variety using MMS-002 (Trumpet Tail) documented by VarietyVista, this Washington Silver Quarter holds the primary catalog position for the 1942-S date and records a mid-production obverse die change. Die markers span two pairings: UVC-0505 / DMR-014 for Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse and obverse at EMDS; Stage C with reverse at MDS and a light die crack in the upper hair at MDS. Then UVC-0278 / DMR-006: Stage D with a die crack down the right wing at LDS, a die crack through lower LAR of DOLLAR, a die crack from S of PLURIBUS to the wing, and the obverse die changed at EMDS. The Trumpet Tail S punch identification tracks which physical S punch was in service at San Francisco. Designed by John Flanagan, struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm during wartime production.
