1942-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-0275 with die marriage DMR-003, the 1942-S Washington Quarter DDO-001 displays light spread on the date, with the reverse featuring a Trumpet Tail S mint mark (MMS-002). Three die states trace the life of this die pair: in early die state, both obverse and reverse appear fresh, while the mid die state reveals a die crack across the upper hair on the obverse and a die crack running down the eagle's right wing on the reverse — two distinct cracks developing simultaneously on both sides of the die pair. The late die state remains unconfirmed, suggesting the dies may have been retired shortly after the MDS cracks appeared. The Trumpet Tail mint mark style (MMS-002), where the lower terminal of the S flares outward, provides an additional identification feature for this wartime silver quarter. The 1942-S Washington Quarter was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the early months of American involvement in World War II, when silver quarter production continued in the standard 90% silver composition. The combination of obverse date doubling, the distinctive Trumpet Tail S, and the dual die crack pattern in MDS makes DDO-001 a multi-diagnostic variety.
