1942-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-0280 and DMR-008, this 1942 San Francisco Washington silver quarter shows a triple-punched S mintmark repunched to the south with a serif-style S, also pairing with MMS-002, the Trumpet Tail mintmark style. Three die states are documented. Stage A remains unconfirmed. Stage B at mid die state shows both sides in mid condition. Stage C in late die state reveals a die crack down the eagle's right wing, another across the forehead and hair, and a third across the bust. The S/S/S southward repunching occurred during hand-punching, where misalignment on the first two punches required a corrective third. The Trumpet Tail designation on MMS-002 refers to a distinctive serif formation tracked as a separate mintmark style. Late die state examples with the extensive cracking offer the easiest identification path for this variety among 1942-S Washington quarters.
