1942 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-015
Error
Description
Cataloged as UVC-0504, DMR-030, this 1942 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter exhibits light spread on RTY of LIBERTY, the ribbon end, and the 2 of the date. Struck in 90% silver (0.1808 oz ASW), the 1942 quarter was produced at wartime levels as the United States fully mobilized for World War II. Three die stages are recognized: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed); Stage B in Mid Die State (unconfirmed); and Stage C in Late Die State, identified by a light die crack across the bust and a crack running down the eagle's right wing to the leaf above the Q of QUARTER. Philadelphia struck over 102 million quarters in 1942, one of the highest prewar mintages in the series. The light spread on the lower portion of LIBERTY and the terminal digit of the date makes DDO-015 a variety that rewards patient examination under moderate magnification. Stage C specimens are the most readily attributable thanks to the dual die crack system, where the bust crack and the wing-to-leaf crack together serve as unmistakable confirmation diagnostics for this die marriage.
