1942 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Exhibiting counterclockwise rotated hub doubling, this 1942 Philadelphia Washington Quarter WDDO-004 shows a CCW spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the bottom of the ribbon, and the date. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1942 25-cent WDDO-004, the spread is consistent across multiple design elements, confirming the rotational nature of the hub misalignment. Die markers provide reliable secondary diagnostics: on the obverse, a die scratch runs southeast from the R in TRUST, and another runs WNW-to-ESE between the 9 and 4 in the date. The reverse shows a die crack running down the eagle's right leg, indicating advancing die fatigue. Struck in the 90% silver composition used for all Washington Quarters through 1964, the 1942 was produced during World War II when the Mint was adapting to wartime demands. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter design had been in production for a decade by 1942, and Philadelphia produced substantial quantities for both circulation and wartime economic needs. The CCW spread and die crack on the reverse leg together make this variety relatively straightforward to confirm under magnification.
