1942 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-013
Error
Description
Cataloged as UVC-0449, DMR-027, this 1942 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter exhibits light spread on the date. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B is MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C in LDS shows the obverse in late die state with a die crack down the eagle's right wing and a die crack from the last S of STATES through US of PLURIBUS to the wing. Struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint during World War II, the 1942 Washington Quarter saw substantial production as wartime economic activity drove demand for circulating coinage. The light spread on the date places DDO-013 among the subtler doubled die varieties in the 1942 quarter series, requiring magnification to confirm. The late die state cracking pattern, particularly the crack tracing from STATES through PLURIBUS to the wing, provides valuable secondary diagnostics. DDO-013 is one of twenty-seven cataloged doubled die obverse varieties for the 1942 Philadelphia quarter, reflecting the large number of working dies employed that year.
