1942 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-012
Error
Description
The 1942 Washington Quarter DDO-012, catalogued by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0237 and DMR-014, presents a medium spread on LIBERTY with a lighter spread on the date and queue, and very light additional spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. Three die stages are documented. Stage A finds both obverse and reverse at Early Die State. Stage B (Middle Die State) brings a light die crack across the upper hair onto the forehead and a die crack down the eagle's right wing on the reverse. Stage C (Late Die State) produces a die crack across the bust while the reverse also reaches LDS. The progression from EDS to LDS gives collectors a physical sequence for positioning a given specimen within the die's lifespan. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver at Philadelphia in 1942 during the early wartime period. Doubled die obverse varieties on silver Washington Quarters attract both series specialists and general variety collectors, and the documented die stage sequence makes DDO-012 a reliable attribution target.
