1942-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-007

Description

Produced during World War II at the Denver Mint, this Washington Quarter doubled die obverse displays light extra thickness on LIBERTY, cataloged as UVC-0258 with a die marriage rating of DMR-009. The variety progresses through at least three documented die states. Stage A represents early die state and remains unconfirmed. Stage B introduces a die scratch between I and B of LIBERTY alongside a second scratch between B and E, with a die crack developing down the eagle's right wing into the adjacent field at mid die state. By Stage C the obverse reaches late die state, and the reverse crack extends from the S of PLURIBUS to the wing beneath AMER of AMERICA, while a separate crack runs from the eagle's wing to the Q of QUARTER. Wartime Denver Mint quarters are widely collected, and doubled dies from this period carry additional appeal because the Mint was operating under intense production pressure to meet both civilian and military demand.
