1942-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 1942-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004 on the Washington Silver Quarter shows light extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY. The Washington Quarter, designed by John Flanagan based on the Jean-Antoine Houdon bust of George Washington, was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm diameter. Die markers from VarietyVista are UVC-0255 and DMR-006, with three documented die states: Stage A at Early Die State remains unconfirmed, Stage B at Mid Die State shows a die crack running across the bust into the queue (the tied ribbon of hair) and continuing into the 1 of the date, plus a die crack running down the eagle's right wing on the reverse, and Stage C at Late Die State is unconfirmed. The 1942-D had a mintage of 17,487,200 pieces during wartime silver quarter production. The die crack progression from the bust through the queue into the date digit provides a useful die-state progression marker, as collectors can approximate when in the die's working life their specimen was struck based on the extent of crack development. The light extra thickness on LIBERTY indicates a close hub doubling spread that affected the letter edges without producing a fully separated secondary image.
