1942-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Identified by the Wexler Team as 1942-D 10-cent WDDO-004, this Mercury Dime variety shows a very close Class II spread towards the center confined to the date. Class II distorted hub doubling creates lateral displacement between hub impressions, and the "very close" qualifier indicates the primary and secondary images nearly overlap — producing subtle broadening of date numerals rather than separated doubled digits. The "towards the center" direction means the secondary impression shifted inward, creating a tightening effect that requires careful comparison against a known normal specimen. No significant die markers were noted on either side, making the date spread the sole diagnostic feature. The 1942-D Mercury Dime was struck at the Denver Mint during the final years of Weinman's Winged Liberty Head series (1916-1945) and the opening year of American involvement in World War II. Composed of 90% silver at 2.5 grams. No other cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are known. Examination should focus on the date under at least 10x magnification, comparing numeral widths against an undoubled example.
